Russia has put the international human rights organisation Amnesty International on the list of “undesirable”. This was announced by the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation on 19 May.
The agency accused the human rights activists because the London headquarters of Amnesty International “is a centre of preparation of global Russophobic projects”, as well as of supporting Ukraine and financing the activities of “foreign agents” and calling for the political and economic isolation of the Russian Federation.
The register of “undesirable” organisations has existed in Russia since 2015. During this time, dozens of media outlets, non-profit organisations and other associations have been included in it.
Inclusion in the list means that an organisation is banned from working in the country and Russian citizens are prohibited from cooperating with it under threat of criminal prosecution. Cooperation with “undesirable” organisations and their financing in Russia is punishable by criminal liability – up to five years’ imprisonment.
