A new wave of concern has swept through Russia’s Ryazan Region after Governor Pavel Malkov reported a fire at one of the local businesses. Without going into detail, he indicated that the incident was linked to a drone attack. Whilst officials have remained tight-lipped, the monitoring project Astra, having analysed photographs and videos published by eyewitnesses, has suggested that the target of the attack was the Ryazan oil refinery, owned by Rosneft.
This refinery is not only vital to the region but is also one of the largest in Russia, with a refining capacity of around 17 million tonnes of oil per year. Since the start of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, it has been targeted on several occasions. Drone attacks were reported in May and July 2026, underscoring its strategic importance.
The Ryazan Oil Refinery plays a key role in supplying fuel to the region and the country as a whole, and damage to it could have serious consequences for the oil sector. Attacks on such facilities are causing serious concern among both the authorities and the public, particularly against the backdrop of ongoing tensions and the armed conflict with Ukraine.
Meanwhile, local residents and experts continue to discuss what security measures could be taken to prevent further attacks. Infrastructure security issues are becoming increasingly pressing, and the authorities are likely to take additional measures to protect strategically important facilities.
