Battery production in Germany reached a record high in 2025, driven by the growth of electric mobility and rising demand for energy storage systems, according to the industry organisation ZVEI.
Battery production last year increased by 11% compared with 2024 and was worth €8.1 billion.
Production of lithium-ion batteries, used in particular in electric vehicles and other forms of electric transport, rose by 28% to €4.6 billion.
The market volume, calculated as the sum of domestic production and imports minus exports, grew by 9% in 2025 to €22.4 billion, coming slightly closer to the record figure set in 2023 (€24.3 billion).
Battery supplies remain stable; however, the competitiveness and sustainability of the German and European manufacturing ecosystem in this sector are under threat, noted Christian Rosenkranz, head of the battery market section at ZVEI.
China remains the main supplier of batteries to Germany: imports from that country rose by 25 per cent last year, to €11 billion.
The trend towards an increasing share of supplies from Asia has been gathering momentum for many years, according to a ZVEI statement, which also highlights Europe’s particularly high dependence on imports of Asian lithium-ion batteries.
Rosenkranz called for a reduction in this dependence and for the competitiveness of European manufacturers to be strengthened through investment incentives and the introduction of more effective measures to combat unfair practices in international trade, including subsidisation.
