A fortnight ago, Ozzy and the Black Sabbath played their last concert at Hill Park in their hometown of Birmingham. The Scenes sat on a black throne, but sang, pointed and threw lightning with their eyes like the good old days.
Ozzy, whose real name is John Michael Osbourne will be remembered first and foremost as the madcap Poppy on stage, who once he bit his head off during a concert. But it wasn’t just these eccentric shenanigans that brought worldwide popularity – you can’t sell tens of millions of records without the innovative style and sound of black sablaca without the unique, glowing, glass-like timbre of Ozzy’s voice and without quality hits like Paranoid, Iron. The time when good rock and roll, relatively mellow, heard passed from the top with the youth of the Flower Children generation , and part of the new generation of teenagers was looking for something harder and darker. And the Birmings gave them a new quality, both in sound and lyrics.
