Canada’s prime minister will travel to Washington to meet with Trump

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he will meet US President Donald Trump in Washington on 6 May to discuss trade and security issues.

“We will focus on both immediate trade pressures and the broader future economic and security relationship between our two sovereign nations,” Carney said on 2 May at a press conference following his recent election victory.

Last month, Canadian Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne noted that “Canada continues to respond strongly to all unjustified and unwarranted tariffs imposed by the United States on Canadian products. The government is determined to eliminate these U.S. tariffs as soon as possible.”

The 25 per cent U.S. tariff on imported cars, which specifically affects Canada, came into effect on the night of April 3.

Also earlier, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada will use countermeasures to impose a 25 per cent duty on all car imports from the US that do not comply with the Free Trade Agreement in response to the US action. He said all revenue from these tariffs will be used to support Canadian auto workers and their industry.
