In the Chinese city of Pengshui (Chongqing Municipality), rescue workers are continuing their search and rescue operation following a major landslide that occurred on 17 July. According to the latest reports, at least eight people have died, with a further 34 still missing.
The situation is being significantly complicated by continuous rain. From the evening of 17 July until the morning of 18 July, heavy rainfall was recorded in the disaster-stricken area. Over a 24-hour period, one weather station recorded more than 192 mm of rainfall.
The adverse weather conditions have made rescue operations even more dangerous. Experts are constantly monitoring the condition of the slope and tracking any possible ground movement to prevent further landslides.
Work is continuing on site to draw up a safe plan for further search and rescue operations. The authorities fear further landslides due to the soil being saturated with moisture.
