Google has announced an update to its Chrome browser that will add several features based on the Gemini neural network. The AI assistant will be accessed directly from the address bar, and will later learn to perform actions on behalf of the user on its own. The Gemini chatbot will work in Chrome even without a Google One subscription and will be available on Windows and Mac computers as well as Android smartphones.
In addition to just chatting with the bot, there will be an AI Mode-a special mode that can create an AI Overview of a page and answer questions about it that can be asked right in the search bar. In addition, AI Mode will allow users to access information in different tabs. In the coming months, the company plans to implement a feature that will allow it to ask Gemini to perform actions, such as transferring items from an email to a marketplace shopping cart.
According to the company, the AI assistant will be able to perform multi-step tasks in the background, utilising the capabilities of Google’s calendar, mapping service and YouTube platform. The feature to access Gemini from the search bar will be available in Chrome for US users as early as this month (English only). Google plans to expand the geography and list of supported languages by the end of 2025, but no details have been announced yet.
