Voting in the second round of the presidential election took place in Romania on 18 May. Polling stations opened at 7:00 and closed at 21:00 local time.
According to the released results of the exit poll CURS , the presidential candidates received the following results:
– Nikushor Dan- 54.1 per cent;
– George Simion-45.9 per cent.
Vanguard exit poll results:
– Nikushor Dan- 54.9 per cent;
– George Simion-45.1 per cent.
The results of the exit polls indicate the victory of the independent candidate Nikushor Dan. But these exit polls do not take into account diaspora votes.
Turnout in the second round of the presidential election was about 65 per cent. an hour before the polls closed, 11,286,075 voters had cast their ballots – 9,687,477 in Romania and 1,598,598 abroad.
Despite the opposite results of the exit polls, Romania’s far-right presidential candidate, George Simion, has already declared himself the winner of the election.
“i am the new president of Romania,” he wrote on social network X.
More than 9 million voters cast their ballots in the first round of Romania’s presidential election at 8pm (turnout: 50.68 per cent).
The first official results are expected soon.
Nationalist George Simion and centrist Bucharest mayor Nicusor Dan are competing in the second round.
Simion was nominated to replace Kelin Georgescu, who was not allowed to run after he won the first round of voting in November. Romanian authorities annulled the results of that vote, claiming Russian interference in the election in favour of Georgescu.
In the first round of the new election, which was held on 4 May, Simion got about 41%, while Dan got almost 21%.
Simion has led in most polls since then, although the latest figures show a nearly even contest.
