Russian fighter jets violated the security zone of a drilling platform on the Baltic Sea-Poland Border Guard Service

Poland’s border guard announced on the evening of 19 September that Russian fighter jets flew at low altitude over the Petrobaltic drilling platform in the Baltic Sea.

“The security zone of the platform was violated. The Polish Armed Forces and other services were informed,” the report said.

The maritime unit of the border guard specified that two fighter jets of the Russian Armed Forces made the overflight.

“Polish security services are constantly monitoring the situation at critical maritime infrastructure facilities, including those outside Poland’s territorial waters,” the unit said. The overflight of fighter jets there was called “provocative behaviour by Russia”.

Petrobaltic is an offshore drilling platform located in the Baltic Sea. Its operator is the Polish company LOTOS Petrobaltic. The company uses the platform to explore and exploit oil and gas fields.

19 In September, the Estonian General Staff said that three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets violated the country’s airspace. According to the Estonian military, the fighter jets were in the country’s airspace for 12 minutes. Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Mihal said that Tallinn had asked for consultations with NATO allies in accordance with Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty.
