South Korea’s statement regarding the sensitivity of the issue is well-founded. The Korean Peninsula has always been at the centre of international diplomacy due to the long-standing tensions between the North and the South. Interestingly, the Ukrainian authorities maintain that the disclosure of information was limited solely to the fact of the handover, without delving into the details of the process. They emphasised that a complete cover-up of this event would have seemed odd against a backdrop of increasing international transparency and cooperation.
The story began in January 2025, when Ukrainian forces captured two North Korean soldiers in the Kursk region, a fact confirmed by South Korean intelligence services. The captives spoke of significant losses amongst North Korean soldiers in Russia; one of them reported that he had spent several days without food or water before being captured.
This incident only serves to highlight just how fragile diplomatic relations between countries are in this day and age. Ukraine, finding itself at the centre of global events, must exercise caution in its statements in order to maintain a balance and the trust of its international partners.
