An important development is unfolding on the international political stage: the US has proposed holding a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the US and Russia. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the discussions are to take the form of technical talks, with the United Arab Emirates chosen as the venue. However, the date of the event remains to be confirmed — it must be agreed upon by US representatives.
Zelenskyy emphasised that, as a preliminary step, the Ukrainian and American sides plan to discuss the details with their European partners, after which the United States will hold separate consultations with Russia. It is expected that in ten days’ time, the participants will return with a clearer position and concrete results.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin has confirmed the possibility of such a meeting taking place in the near future. Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the idea was discussed during the latest telephone conversation between Presidents Putin and Trump. Whilst specific details remain unclear, Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev is continuing talks with US representatives, focusing on economic cooperation.
Interestingly, Zelenskyy also sees the upcoming G20 summit in Miami as a potential opportunity to achieve concrete results in the negotiations. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has previously confirmed that Vladimir Putin has been invited to this summit, which will take place on 14–15 December. For his part, President Donald Trump expressed optimism regarding the resolution of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and did not rule out the imposition of further sanctions against Russia should this prove necessary.
Earlier, Zelenskyy stated that he was prepared to travel to Miami if Putin were to attend the G20 summit. It now remains to be seen whether the Russian leader will agree to take part in the event and whether the parties will manage to reach any agreement that would contribute to a peaceful resolution of the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
