Off the coast of Northern Cyprus on the morning of 30 August, a passenger vessel carrying 259 passengers and eight crew members capsized. A rescue operation is currently underway.
According to preliminary reports, at least seven people have been confirmed dead, with a further 23 still missing.
According to local authorities, the Filo Jet ferry left the port of Kyrenia around midday local time. It was due to sail for Turkey tomorrow according to the timetable, but the voyage was brought forward due to weather conditions. Approximately four nautical miles from the port, the captain was unable to cope with the high waves, after which the vessel capsized.
The mayor of Kyrenia, Murat Senkul, told CNN Turk that 159 people had already been evacuated from the vessel, and described the situation as “very serious”. The injured are being taken to hospital.
