A tanker in the Strait of Hormuz was attacked by an “unidentified projectile”, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a British agency monitoring maritime security, reported on 27 June, following the first exchange of fire between the United States and Iran since they signed a framework agreement to end the war in the Middle East.
The UKMTO stated that the tanker sustained damage to its bridge, but it is reported that “the entire crew is safe”.
It was also noted that “there are currently no reports of environmental damage”.
The day before, US President Donald Trump accused Iran of attacking ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
On 26 June, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned that safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz could not be guaranteed without coordination with Tehran.
Freedom of navigation through the Strait has become one of the central issues in efforts to secure an agreement between the United States and Iran after Tehran effectively closed the waterway following US-Israeli air strikes earlier this year.
