Amid blows to oil refining, Russian government extends petrol export ban

The Russian government has extended the ban on petrol exports, Russian state news agency TASS reported on 27 August. The ban will be complete until 30 September and will affect both direct producers and retailers.

From 1 October, direct producers will be able to export petrol, while exporters without their own production will get this right from 1 November.

The current ban was due to end on 31 August. It was introduced back in February for regular retailers, and in July it was extended to producers.

Petrol export bans in Russia are introduced almost every year, usually for the period of active agricultural work.

This summer, wholesale petrol prices in Russia are at record levels. In addition to the traditional seasonal factor, this is influenced by AFU attacks on energy infrastructure. Reuters estimates that these attacks have damaged 17% of Russia’s refining capacity.
