An earthquake has struck China: houses destroyed, there are victims

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck northwest China on Saturday morning, 27 September, state media reported.

The tremor was recorded at 5: 49 local time in Lunxi County of Gansu Province at a depth of about 10 kilometres, the Government Seismological Centre said. The epicentre was located about 140 kilometres southeast of the provincial capital Lanzhou.

Seven people were injured, according to Xinhua news agency. State broadcaster CCTV said the quake destroyed eight houses and damaged more than a hundred.

Videos circulating in Chinese media showed rescuers removing rubble made of bricks and roof debris.

Earlier on 28 March, an earthquake struck Myanmar. Most of the destruction was in Mandalay, Myanmar’s second largest city with a population of over a million people. Near Mandalay was the epicentre of the tremors. The tremors were also felt in Thailand, Vietnam and China.
