An exhibition of Ukrainian pryanokas will open on 26 May in Novi Sad

An exhibition dedicated to the 32nd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Serbia will open at the Novi Sad Cultural Centre tomorrow, 26 May, the Serbian Economist reports.

The exhibition will present the Ukrainian tradition of pysanky – the art of painting Easter eggs, which is considered an important part of Ukraine’s cultural heritage and a symbol of life, renewal and unity.

The exhibition will start at 15:00 at the Cultural Centre of Novi Sad, 5 Katolicka Porta Street.

The exposition will be divided into three thematic blocks, each of which reveals separate elements of the Ukrainian tradition of painting Easter eggs.

The first block – “Ikanicha: Mariupol Pysanka” – is dedicated to the cultural heritage of the Azov region and combines different historical periods, traditions and creative approaches.

The second block – “Pysanka of Ukraine” – will present pysanky from the central regions of Ukraine, primarily Kyiv region and Podolia. These works are distinguished by a characteristic colour palette and symbolic ornaments reflecting the richness of the cultural heritage of the region.

The third block – “magpie” or “Cossack bows” – will be dedicated to territorial pysanky of the Odessa region. It is based on the “magpie” pysanky, which is closely connected with this region.

For Ukrainian-Serbian relations such an exhibition has not only cultural, but also diplomatic significance. It takes place against the backdrop of intensified contacts between Kyiv and Belgrade, including recent talks on resuming work on a free trade agreement and a Serbian-Ukrainian business forum in Belgrade.
