Britain summoned Iranian ambassador over social media posts

The UK announced on 28 April that it had summoned the Iranian ambassador to London over “unacceptable and provocative comments on social media.”

The UK Foreign Office noted in a statement that Middle East Affairs Minister Hamish Falconer emphasised that the Iranian embassy “must cease any form of communication that could be seen as encouraging violence in the UK or internationally”.

Iranian representatives have not yet commented on the British statement, Reuters reported.

In a message on the Telegram channel of the Iranian embassy in London earlier this month, Iranians living in Britain were asked to volunteer for a campaign in which they would have to declare their willingness to sacrifice their lives in a war with the US and Israel.

The Foreign Office did not specify which embassy social media post was in question. British MPs have previously warned of “significant and widespread threats” from Iran to the UK.

Last month, Britain also summoned the Iranian ambassador after an Iranian national and a person with dual British-Iranian citizenship were charged under the UK National Security Act with assisting Iran’s intelligence services.
