Canada’s new prime minister: it’s time for Russia to come to the negotiating table

Canada’s new Prime Minister Mark Carney has said that Russia should agree to a ceasefire against Ukraine.

He wrote this on social network X on the night of 16 March after conversations with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “and many close allies” about “Ukraine’s path to peace.”

“Canada supports the proposal for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine. Russia must now stop procrastinating and attacking. It is time for Russia to come to the negotiating table in good faith. As agreed by the G7 in Charlevoix, we will increase monitoring of sanctions to encourage compliance. Canada is a staunch ally of Ukraine. We will make sure Ukraine has the military support it needs to defend itself – now and in the future,” Carney stressed.

The Ukrainian president’s office did not report the conversation.

Mark Carney was sworn in as Canada’s prime minister on 14 March. Carney, a 59-year-old former head of Canada’s central bank, succeeded Justin Trudeau after he won the election as leader of the powerful Liberal Party.
