The drone that hit a residential house in the Romanian city of Galati on the night of 29 May was a Russian drone of the Geran-2 type. This was announced by Romanian President Nicusor Dan with reference to the results of the technical report.
According to him, the Cyrillic inscription “Geran-2” was identified on the found fragments, while the analysed electronic components, navigation systems, control modules, engine and structural elements show similarities up to identity with other Geran-2 drones previously found on Romanian territory and accurately identified as made in the Russian Federation.
“Based on all these elements, the investigation unequivocally concludes that the fragments found in Galati come from a ” Geran-2 ” drone of Russian origin,” he wrote on social network X.
Nicusor Dan emphasised that the fact that such a device hit an apartment building in Romania, causing injuries and material damage, is of particular seriousness and Russia is solely responsible.
He said Bucharest will continue to act together with its partners to strengthen security on the Alliance’s eastern border, Romania will not ignore or discount any incident that endangers the lives of its citizens, national security or sovereignty.
At dawn on 29 May, Romania’s Ministry of Defence reported that a Russian drone flew into Romanian airspace overnight and crashed into a high-rise building in Galati near the border with Ukraine, causing a fire to break out on the roof of the building. Local authorities reported at least two injured.
Romanian President Nicusor Dan held Russia responsible for the incident and announced the closure of the Russian consulate general in Constanta.
Russian President Vladimir Putin later told Russian media that the drone could allegedly have been Ukrainian. According to the state-run TASS news agency, he said that Moscow was allegedly ready to carry out an “objective investigation” if the wreckage of the drone was handed over to it.
