The number of victims of the Jet Set nightclub roof collapse in the Dominican Republic has risen to 226, local authorities said on 13 April.
According to the country’s health minister, all the bodies of the victims have already been handed over to their families.
A total of 221 people died at the scene of the tragedy, while four others died in hospital. Among them was a Costa Rican national who died on Saturday. However, the minister warned that some victims with severe burns are still fighting for life.
The roof fell on the night of 8 April during a performance by 69-year-old singer Rubby Perez and his orchestra. The singer’s body was pulled from the rubble on Wednesday morning, 9 April.
Local sports stars, politicians and artists are among the dead.
Officials said it was too early to determine why the roof collapsed. Earlier, the president’s office said 189 people had been rescued from the rubble.
The tragedy was the largest death toll in the Dominican Republic in decades.
