Death toll in Russian arms factory explosion rises to 20

The number of people killed in an explosion in the gunpowder shop of the Elastik weapons factory in Russia’s Ryazan region has risen to 20. This was reported in the operative headquarters of the region.

Injured, according to the headquarters, 134 people. At the same time, the Russian Emergencies Ministry reported 154 injured. Search and rescue work continues. According to the agency, half of the destroyed structures have been dismantled.

The explosion in the powder shop of the Elastik plant in the Shilovsky district of the Ryazan region of the Russian Federation occurred in the morning of 15 August. The publication Astra with reference to the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation wrote that first a fire started, which spread to three buildings – a warehouse with TNT shells and buildings of the second production workshop. In particular, the workshop was engaged in the production of 152 mm calibre shells.

The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation opened a case under the article “Violation of industrial safety requirements of hazardous production facilities”.

In October 2021, a similar explosion occurred at the Razryad enterprise, which bought a plot of land near the Elastik plant; 17 people were killed then.
