Dronophobia: Vilnius airport closed for the third night in a row due to balloons from Belarus

The airport in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius has been closed for the third consecutive evening due to balloons flying into the Baltic country from Belarus, LRT reported on 26 October.

“Vilnius airport is closed from 21:42 to 01:40,” the report said.

Some flights have been diverted to Kaunas and Riga.

For example, an airBaltic aircraft, which arrived from Munich and was supposed to land in Vilnius, is heading to Riga airport, while a Ryanair aircraft from Milan – to Kaunas.

Due to the repeated incidents, Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginenė is calling a meeting of the National Security Commission for 27 October. According to the politician, the meeting will discuss long-term measures to solve the crisis. She did not rule out the decision to close the Medininkai and Šalčininkai border points on the border with Belarus for a longer period of time.

The Lithuanian Presidential Office says that in order to control the situation, it may consider restricting transit to Russia’s Kaliningrad and closing the border with Belarus for a longer period of time.
