EU talks about security guarantees for Ukraine

The EU has revealed which security guarantees for Ukraine are currently being discussed, an EU official said in a related statement

“On the EU side, we will continue to prioritise Ukraine’s security. Ukraine needs strong, reliable, long-term security guarantees, including continued support from Europe, the United States and other partners to strengthen its armed forces. We welcome the involvement of US President Donald Trump in this process,” he emphasised.

This comment can be attributed to the official EU position, the official emphasised.

The work on security guarantees is mainly conducted within the framework of the so-called coalition of the willing meetings (at the level of leaders, defence ministers, chiefs of general staff).

According to media reports, EU ambassadors will hold an emergency meeting in Brussels today following a summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the presidents of Poland, Finland, France, the German chancellor and the NATO secretary general discussed the summit during a phone call with Trump. There was also a general conversation involving the president of Ukraine.

After the talks, Donald Trump said on social network Truth that during the visit of Vladimir Zelensky to Washington on 18 August, a trilateral meeting may be agreed upon.

The Ukrainian side has previously repeatedly stated its readiness for meetings in various formats to achieve lasting peace.

On the night of 16 August (Kiev time), talks between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin took place in Anchorage, Alaska. They lasted almost three hours. At the joint press conference, Trump and Putin did not announce agreements to end Russia’s war against Ukraine. Trump spoke about agreements on important points, but did not give details.

Earlier, Zelensky said that Ukraine is not going to “give its land to anyone” and the AFU will not leave Donbass itself. Kiev insists on firm security guarantees in case of any agreements with Russia.

The leaders of France, Italy, Germany, Poland, the UK, Finland and the European Commission earlier noted that “the road to peace in Ukraine cannot be paved without Ukraine’s participation”.
