Flooding in China kills two people, submerges villages

In North and Northeast China, intense rain has killed two people and forced thousands to evacuate, with local authorities warning of further flooding and landslides.

In Hebei province, a record 145mm of rain fell in one hour in Fuping near Baoding, with two people missing after severe flooding and landslides hit Hebei province

China’s Ministry of Water Resources has warned of flooding in 11 provinces, including Beijing and Hebei, due to the threat of overflowing small and medium-sized rivers and mountain streams. Several villages in the Beijing city area, particularly in Miyun County, have been flooded-more than 3,000 residents have been evacuated due to damage to power and communication lines. The flow of water to the Miyun reservoir has reached a peak velocity of 6,550 cubic metres per second.

According to meteorologists, more than 100 mm of rain is expected in some areas within six hours-increasing the risk of waterlogging in low-lying areas, as well as the threat of geological disasters such as landslides and mudslides.
