Hungarian fighter jets were put in the air because of five Russian planes near Latvia – NATO

Two Hungarian fighter jets were airborne over five Russian warplanes over the Baltic Sea. This was reported by NATO Air Command in social network x on the evening of 25 September.

“Two Hungarian Gripen fighter jets were airborne on 25 September from Siauliai in Lithuania in response to Russian Su-30s, Su-35s and three MiG-31s flying close to Latvian airspace,” the statement said.

NATO added that Hungary was demonstrating the alliance’s commitment to the defence of the Baltic states and its eastern flank.

NATO countries have accused Russia of unprecedented violations of its airspace several times in the past fortnight.

The first case involved drones: about 20 drones entered Polish airspace on the night of 10 September. On 13 September, according to Romania’s Ministry of Defence, a Russian drone used by Russian forces to attack Ukraine and which entered Romanian airspace lingered over the NATO country for 50 minutes before returning back to Ukraine. On 19 September, Estonian authorities said Russian fighter jets had violated the country’s airspace. The Russian authorities deny the accusations.
