In Georgia, the former prime minister confessed to receiving illegal income

Former Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has cooperated with the investigation and confessed to committing a crime, the State Security Service (SSS) said on 22 October.

“Today Irakli Garibashvili was questioned by the State Security Service and he fully admitted to receiving illegal income for many years. Accordingly, in the coming days, the investigation, based on the available and additionally obtained evidence, will consider the issue of qualification of his actions and election of a preventive measure against him, which will also be announced to the public,” the agency said.

Garibashvili is probably not detained yet. Emzar Gagnidze, head of the Anti-Corruption Agency of the SDB Emzar Gagnidze did not answer additional questions of journalists, particularly regarding the detention.

A few days ago, the SDB reported that as a result of searches conducted in the homes of former Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, former head of the State Security Service Grigol Liluashvili, former Prosecutor General Otar Partskhaladze, as well as persons related to them and other former officials, more than seven million US dollars and 136,000 GEL in cash were seized.

According to the agency, in addition to cash, 198 pieces of jewellery and watches, expensive paintings, several thousand pages of documentation, 50 mobile phones and 119 electronic devices were found and seized during the searches.
