The Ministry of Community and Territorial Development has made the development of charging infrastructure a priority in order to support the rapid growth in the number of privately owned electric vehicles, noted Deputy Minister Serhiy Derkach following his participation in the ‘Electro-Perspective 2026’, held in Kyiv this week.
“The private electric vehicle market has grown about tenfold over the last five years. The network of charging stations is expanding in line with this: by the end of last year, there were already 11,000 of them, although just a few years ago there were only 3,000,” he wrote on Facebook on Saturday.
“It is precisely the development of the electric vehicle charging infrastructure that motivates buyers to consider an electric car. And this is our priority,” Derkach emphasised.
He pointed out that the National Transport Strategy 2030 has identified the development of electric transport as one of its priorities. According to him, from the state’s perspective, this means increasing the proportion of electric vehicles whilst reducing the total number of cars by replacing them with public transport for carrying people in cities.
The Deputy Minister noted that the EU will not require a specific percentage of electric vehicles, but will mandate the construction of car parks with electric charging infrastructure.
“These are long-term and costly projects, which we are already starting to work on. Ukraine has its own manufacturers of electric charging stations. However, their number does not meet demand. For example, we have one electric charging station for almost 33 electric vehicles. In European countries, the ratio is up to 10 vehicles per station,” Derkach explained.
He reported that the Ministry of Development has already drawn up a draft Concept for the Development of Electric Transport in Ukraine, which will be submitted to the government for consideration in the near future.
