Iran’s foreign minister will address the UN Human Rights Council today

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will address the UN Human Rights Council on Friday, AFP reported.

Araghchi “will speak in person … at the start of the afternoon session” at 13:00 GMT (15:00 Kiev time), Pascal Sim told a press briefing.

The UN spokeswoman added that Israel’s ambassador to the UN in Geneva, Daniel Meron, will address journalists shortly beforehand.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said at today’s UN Security Council meeting that it was “of the utmost importance that it uphold and enforce its own resolution 487, unanimously adopted in response to the Israeli regime’s 1981 attack on Iraq’s nuclear facility”

“The wording of this resolution is unambiguous: any military attack on nuclear facilities is an attack on the entire IAEA safeguards regime and ultimately on the NPT. It applies not only to past actions but also to future behaviour, setting a clear legal standard against the use or threat of force directed against nuclear facilities,” he wrote on social media X.

He said if the Council does not act now, “it must explain to the international community why its legal principles are only selectively applied, it will also bear ultimate responsibility if the global non-proliferation regime one day fails”.

The Iranian minister noted that the Arak heavy water reactor-a facility under comprehensive IAEA safeguards and, he said, being built in strict accordance with technical specifications agreed in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) to eliminate any proliferation risk-was bombed yesterday.

According to the website, the UN Security Council will discuss threats to international peace and security on 20 June.

Israel began airstrikes on Iranian territory on 13 June, attacking nuclear, military and energy facilities. In response, Iran launched missile and drone strikes against Israel.
