Iran’s supreme leader makes first public statement since truce declared

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared victory over Israel and said his country had “slapped America in the face”.

It was his first statement since the US strikes and declaration of a ceasefire in the war between Iran and Israel.

In his address, he said the US only intervened in the war because it “felt that if it did not intervene, the Zionist regime would be completely destroyed.” But, he said, the US “did not gain anything from this war”.

“The Islamic Republic won and in return gave America a slap in the face,” he said, referring to the missile attack on a US base in Qatar.

Israel launched airstrikes on Iran on 13 June, attacking nuclear, military and energy facilities. Iran responded with missile and drone strikes against Israel.

The US launched several strikes on Iran on the night of 22 June. They justified their actions by the threat of Tehran building nuclear weapons.

Tehran has repeatedly claimed that its nuclear programme is peaceful.

On 24 June, US President Donald Trump said a “complete and absolute” ceasefire had been reached in the conflict between Israel and Iran. However, hours later he said that both Israel and Iran had violated the ceasefire agreement.
