Japan is investing in the US economy as part of its agreement with the United States, US President Donald Trump said.
“We just made a major deal with Japan (…). Japan will invest at my direction $550bn in the United States, which will receive 90 per cent of the profits,” Trump wrote on The Truth Social network.
He also noted that the US will start supplying cars, rice and other agricultural products to Japan.
Under the agreement, he said, Tokyo will pay 15 per cent duties on US imports.
Meanwhile, a senior official in the administration of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba told NHK television that the agreements reached were “the result of persistent negotiations”.
“The materials released by President Trump on social media are correct and welcomed by Japan. They are the result of persistent negotiations by the Minister of Economic Recovery Affairs, Resei Akazawa,” the TV channel’s interlocutor said.
Earlier, the US President promised to impose a 25% tariff on all goods coming from Japan from 1 August 2025.
