Kazakhstan plans to ban exports of non-ferrous metals

Kazakhstan plans to introduce a ban on the export of non-ferrous metals by all types of transport for a period until 31 December 2025, the press service of the Ministry of Trade and Integration of the Republic reports.

The press service specified that the initiative was considered on Friday at a meeting of the interdepartmental commission on foreign trade policy and participation in international economic organisations.

“The interdepartmental commission supported the introduction of a ban on the export of billets and castings of non-ferrous metals from the territory of Kazakhstan by all means of transport for a period until 31 December 2025. The ban applies to unprocessed copper, aluminium slabs and tickets, lead castings,” the message reads.

As explained in the press service, this measure is aimed at “providing the domestic market with strategic raw materials, preventing the export of products with low added value and stimulating the processing of non-ferrous metals within the country”.

In addition, the meeting decided to zero the export duty on gallium, which was previously 10 per cent. “The measure is aimed at stimulating the production of gallium in Kazakhstan and the development of export potential,” the press service noted.

The Ministry of Trade specified that in recent years gallium has not been produced in the country, but Kazakhstan has the necessary resource potential to enter this market and can occupy a niche in the global supply chain.

“This, in turn, will create opportunities for the growth of export activity, increasing foreign exchange earnings and expanding the presence of Kazakh producers in foreign markets,” the ministry said.

Kazakhstan now has a ban on the export of scrap and waste of ferrous and non-ferrous metals from the territory of the republic. For the first time it was introduced from 6 May 2022, its term has been repeatedly extended, the last time – in April this year.
