Poland holds a second round of presidential elections

Poland is holding a second round of presidential elections on Sunday, 1 June.

The country’s citizens are choosing between Rafal Trzaskowski of the Civic Platform and the Law and Justice candidate Karol Nawrocki, who won the most votes in the first round of the race.

Polling stations opened at 7am local time.

Voting will continue until 21: 00. Results of exit polls are expected immediately after the polls close and official results are expected on Monday, 2 June.

Almost 29 million Poles inside the country have the right to vote in the second round of elections. And more than 500 thousand abroad.

According to the latest polls, the candidates’ performance is almost equal – 46.3 per cent support each. In the first round, held on 18 May, Trzaskowski received 31% of the vote and Navrotski 30%.

The results of the second round, scheduled for 1 June, could determine the future direction of Poland’s political development. Trzaskowski’s victory will strengthen the course of rapprochement with the EU and liberal reforms. In case of Navrocki’s victory, Poland is likely to have a continuation of the political crisis and possible early parliamentary elections.
