Poland’s Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek has written to the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola
Today, Attorney General Waldemar Żurek submitted a request to the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, asking for her consent to the arrest and compulsory appearance of Polish MEP Grzegorz Braun. This was announced by Anna Adamyak, spokesperson for the Office of the Prosecutor General, on 14 July.
The office cites the findings of an investigation conducted by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Wrocław concerning Braun under the following articles of the Polish Criminal Code:
- Unlawful deprivation of liberty (Article 189)
- Defamation (Article 212)
- Insulting a public official (Article 226)
- Damage to property (Article 288)
- Violation of a public official’s personal integrity (Article 222)
- Propaganda of fascism and totalitarianism (Article 256)
As Members of the European Parliament enjoy immunity, in June 2025 the Attorney General submitted a request to Metsoli for authorisation to prosecute Brown. The European Parliament waived the Polish MEP’s immunity in relation to the acts set out in the request.
Consequently, Żurek prepared a decision to bring charges and took steps to serve them and question the MEP as a suspect. However, according to the Prosecutor General’s Office, Brown and his lawyer ignored five summonses from the law enforcement authorities.
“The behaviour of Grzegorz Brown and his lawyer – which consisted of leaving the hearing without the prosecutor’s consent or failing to appear after a recess – prevented the charges from being brought and the suspect from being questioned. In the prosecutor’s view, these actions were deliberate and aimed at delaying the pre-trial proceedings by exploiting immunity,” stated Adamyak.
The Office of the Prosecutor General is seeking the European Parliament’s consent, as required by the rules of procedure, for Brown’s arrest. The spokesperson emphasised that this request is the prosecutor’s response to ‘the positions expressed during the proceedings’:
“Such behaviour demonstrates a disregard for procedural obligations and the actions of the Polish public prosecutor’s office, and, as a result, places itself above the existing legal order.”
Mezola and the European Parliament’s press service have not yet publicly commented on the Polish public prosecutor’s office’s request. Braun has also not commented on the request. Earlier, according to Polish Radio, he had rejected the allegations against him.
Grzegorz Braun is co-chair of the anti-Ukrainian and anti-Semitic party ‘Confederation’. In particular, in November 2024, he shared a map of Ukraine on X, divided into ‘new Russian regions’, a “pro-Russian state entity” and “disputed territories”, implying that the western regions of Ukraine could be “annexed” to Poland.
