At least 20 members of pro-Iranian forces were killed in air strikes carried out by the United States and Saudi Arabia on Iraq, according to the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) – an organisation comprising predominantly pro-Iranian militias, which has officially been part of Iraq’s security forces since 2016.
In a statement published on 29 July, the PMF described this figure as preliminary and added that at least 32 people had been injured.
According to the organisation, the strikes targeted positions in the provinces of Baghdad, Wasit, Nineveh, Basra, Kirkuk, Karbala and Diyala, resulting in damage to military facilities and equipment.
On 28 July, US and Saudi Arabian forces carried out strikes on targets in eastern Iraq linked to Iran. According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the attack was in response to more than 30 recent drone strikes against US troops and Saudi Arabia’s energy infrastructure. According to CENTCOM, the attacks on US troops were unsuccessful.
