Last night was a harrowing one for residents of the Russian town of Balakovo in the Saratov Region and the capital, Moscow. The authorities have reported a drone attack that caused panic and left a trail of destruction in its wake.
Roman Busargin, Governor of the Saratov Region, reported on the tragic incident in Balakovo, which resulted in one fatality. In addition, several residential buildings were damaged. However, despite these events, the city’s infrastructure systems continue to operate without disruption.
The location of one of the damaged buildings has attracted attention – it is situated just three kilometres from the Balakovo Thermal Power Station, a key facility for the city’s heat supply. This raises questions about the possible objectives of the attack.
Ukrainian monitoring channels Exilenova+ and Supernova+ suggest that the main targets may have been Sberbank’s data centre and the MZ Balakovo metallurgical plant. These facilities are situated in the city’s industrial zone, where, according to NASA FIRMS data, fires were recorded. Information regarding the attack on Sberbank’s data centre has also been confirmed by an analyst from the Astra channel.
It remains unclear who is behind this attack and what their motives are. Questions remain unanswered, and the investigation is continuing to gather evidence to shed light on the incident. The city’s residents remain on edge, awaiting further clarification from the authorities.
