Romania: Georgescu says he is leaving politics

Former Romanian presidential candidate Kelin Georgescu said he would focus on his family, which needs peace and health. he said this in a Facebook post.

Georgescu noted that he will not take over the leadership of any political party.

“I have decided to stop my active participation in the political process, given that this stage of sovereignty has, in my view, come to an end. I wish to emphasise that this choice is a personal one and does not imply any condemnation against those who continue to support the cause. I have decided henceforth to be a passive observer of public and social life,” he wrote.

Georgescu also announced that he will not lead any political party or create a political platform.

“I have decided to remain outside any party structure, I am not a member of any political party, parliamentary or extra-parliamentary, and I have no political affiliation. I have decided to remain neutral and equidistant with no political affiliation. I do not wish to hold any position in the Romanian state in the current situation,” Georgescu said.

Kelin Georgescu’s statement came on the same day Nicusor Dan took the presidential oath of office and assumed the mandate of the newly elected president.

Romanian President Nicusor Dan was sworn in on Monday, 26 May 2025, and assumed the mandate he received after the 18 May election.
