Romanian President Nicusor Dan announced on 20 June that he had chosen Ilie Bolojan, leader of the Liberal Party, as the country’s prime ministerial candidate after weeks of negotiations.
Bolojan, 56, was previously acting president from February to May, when Dan won the election.
Dan said Bolojan was the “most suitable person” for the job, which includes solving the budget crisis.
“Romania is interested in the government having the support of a solid majority and the parties have realised this,” the president said.
The prime minister’s candidacy still has to be approved by lawmakers.
“I will continue negotiations with political parties to ensure a parliamentary majority, to finalise the government and to define the governing programme,” Bolhogan said.
One of the biggest issues Romania’s new government will face is how to reduce the country’s large budget deficit, one of the highest in the EU.
The second round of Romania’s repeat presidential election was held on 18 May amid a political crisis. According to the election commission, the centrist, pro-European and pro-Ukrainian mayor of Bucharest, Nicusor Dan, won. he received 53.6 per cent of the vote, while far-right candidate George Simion won 46.4 per cent.
