Russia announces closure of Polish consulate in Kaliningrad

Russia has announced the withdrawal of consent to the operation of the Polish consulate in Kaliningrad. The Russian service of Radio Liberty reported that this was stated in a note from the Russian Foreign Ministry handed to the Polish Charge d’Affaires in the Russian Federation.

The consulate will stop working on 29 August.

“This step is caused by unreasonable and hostile actions of the Polish side, which consisted in reducing the Russian consular presence on the territory of the Republic of Poland under far-fetched pretext,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The Polish Foreign Ministry said on 11 July that it would “adequately respond” to Russia’s decision to close the Polish consulate in Kaliningrad.

“The possibility of such a decision has been taken into account by the Foreign Ministry. This does not mean that this decision is legal… The Foreign Ministry will adequately respond to the actions of the Russian Federation,” the ministry’s spokesman Pawel Wroński told reporters.

Polish authorities decided in May to close the Russian consulate in Krakow after investigators found that Russian security services were involved in the arson attack on a shopping centre in Warsaw in May 2024.
