On 20 March, Russia experienced a massive disruption in the work of Internet services and telecom operators, as evidenced by the data of Downdetector and “Failure.rf” services.
Problems were recorded in the work of Twitch, Discord, Figma, Cloudflare platforms, as well as telecom operators, in particular, MTS, Megafon, Rostelecom.
The Federal Service Roskomnadzor said that the failure was due to the use of foreign servers. The agency recommended that Russian organisations “use the capacities of Russian hosting providers”.
The Russian regulator earlier announced plans to monitor the dependence of domestic services on foreign infrastructure. The inspections are explained by the need to develop measures to improve the security of services as part of the task of ensuring network sovereignty. It is not specified whether today’s failure is related to Roskomnadzor’s work.
