State Department names new US chargé d’affaires in Ukraine

United States President Donald Trump has appointed diplomat Julie Davis as chargé d’affaires to Ukraine, State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said at a briefing on 1 May.

She congratulated the signing of the Economic Partnership Agreement between the two countries, noting that Trump envisioned that cooperation between the American and Ukrainian peoples should show “both sides’ commitment to lasting peace and prosperity in Ukraine.”

“For these reasons, President Trump and Secretary Rubio have appointed Ambassador Julie Davis to serve as chargé d’affaires in Kiev at this critical moment as we move toward a peace agreement to end the bloodshed,” she said.

Bruce added that Davis-an experienced diplomat who has held key positions over the past 30 years. She has served as U.S. ambassador to Cyprus since February 2023.

“This moment calls for the best State Department officials, and Amb. Davis is the choice of the president and the secretary of state,” the spokeswoman added.

The US embassy in Kiev specified that Davis will assume her duties on 5 May:

“In this position, she will work hard to end the war and end the bloodshed, strengthening bilateral relations and making America and Ukraine safer, stronger and more prosperous.”
