The head of Rosatom’s composite division committed suicide in Russia

UMATEX CEO Alexander Tyunin committed suicide in the village of Kokoshkino in New Moscow, Russian media reported, including the state-run TASS agency.

Tyunin’s body and a suicide note were found on the road next to his car. The note said he was “tired of fighting depression.” A hunting rifle was found nearby.

Alexander Tyunin, 50, became general director of Rosatom’s composite division and scientific and production complex Khimpromengineering (later-UMATEX) in 2016. As noted by the Russian publication “Agency”, Rosatom’s composite division is Russia’s leading enterprise for the production of carbon fibre, which is used in aircraft, construction, shipbuilding and energy.

UMATEX was engaged in import substitution of composite materials for the Russian medium-range airliner MS – 21.Due to poor technical characteristics, the serial production of the aircraft, which was going to be purchased by Aeroflot, was constantly postponed.

“Agency” recalls that on Thursday, Andrei Krotkov, a retired FSB lieutenant colonel and CEO and co-owner of the Zeppelin management company, whose clients include Rosatom, probably tried to shoot himself. This was first reported by the MNS publication on the evening of 18 September, citing its sources.

The Agency notes that among Zeppelin’s clients on its website are Transneft, United Engine Corporation (part of Rostec), VEB.

RF, EKS Group (associated with GRU), and NTV.

The firm has also been awarded government contracts for the maintenance of the K2 business park of the Ministry of Defence and the VR-Resurs2 office and business centre (part of Russian Helicopters).

In the July 2025 corporate edition of Zeppelin, Krotkov described the first half of the year as “extremely difficult” due to the “unprecedented” debt that customers had accumulated to the company. In the same text, Krotkov noted that the company had new facilities, in particular the “unique” IFC of the Roscosmos National Space Centre.
