Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, head of the Vatican’s diplomatic service, who was on a three-day visit to Moscow, held a meeting with Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian President. This was reported on social media platform X by the Secretariat of State of the Holy See.
“During the conversation, they discussed current issues on the international agenda,” the Vatican statement said, though no details of the meeting were provided.
Gallagher’s meeting with Ushakov had been scheduled for 26 August. No reasons were given for the meeting being postponed by one day.
On 25 August, Gallagher, the Vatican’s Secretary for Relations with States and International Organisations, also held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
In a statement following the talks, the cardinal reiterated Pope Leo XIV’s call to put an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine and the suffering of the civilian population.
