British and French officials are shifting their attention from deploying peacekeeping troops to ensuring Ukraine’s long-term defence without US support. This was reported by The Telegraph.
British and French officials drawing up plans for a peacekeeping force in Ukraine discussed the need to be “realistic” about US President Donald Trump leaving Ukraine.
“Let’s be realistic and recognise that the US will never be on board,” the Telegraph quoted a Western official as describing the sombre mood at the meeting in The Hague.
The European diplomat added: “the discussion was mainly about how to maintain the necessary support to Ukraine when we assume that the US will continue to provide only some specific resources such as intelligence”
It is now feared that the US president will honour his threat to abandon his role as mediator after failing to bring Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table.
