Washington will introduce from 1 August a duty of 30% on goods from the European Union and Mexico. This was announced by US President Donald Trump.
“We will charge a duty of only 30% on goods from EU countries in order to eliminate the trade deficit that we have with the EU,” wrote Trump in a letter to the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
At the same time, the US president did not reject the possibility of continuing negotiations with the European Union.
Trump sent a similar letter to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. The document says that Mexico has never been able to stop the work of drug cartels in the United States.
In early April, Trump imposed duties of 10 per cent on almost every country in the world, and for many more, surcharges on this basic tariff. Within a week, that decision was suspended until 9 July in order to reach trade agreements with other countries. The US has now only reached such agreements with the UK and Vietnam, with a few agreements also reached with China.
Trump recently said that the deadline for imposing tariffs on imports from other countries, which expires on 9 July, for 1 August.
