Foreign Ministry: Iran considers US proposal to resume nuclear talks but needs guarantees

Iran’s foreign minister said the US is trying to restart nuclear talks with Tehran, while emphasising that his country is in no hurry to resume negotiations.

“The Americans are insisting on returning to the negotiating table,” Abbas Araqchi said in a televised statement, quoted by Bloomberg.

He said Tehran is weighing its options on the timing, location and structure of potential talks but “is in no hurry to enter into reckless negotiations.”

Araqchi also said Iran needs assurances that it will not be attacked again.

“Some assurances have been made that there will be no more war and we are considering them,” he said. – “If an opportunity arises to secure the interests of the Iranian people, we will not lose it. The doors of diplomacy are never closed.”

Araqchi was the chief negotiator in Oman-brokered talks with the US that collapsed after Israel launched strikes on 13 June.

Araqchi’s statement came after US President Donald Trump met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, where he said he was open to lifting sanctions against Iran.

US special envoy to the Middle East Steve Whitkoff who led the US delegation to the previous talks, Yee said the meeting would take place soon, possibly in a week.

Israel began striking Iran on the night of 13 June, the US launched several strikes on the night of 22 June. They justified their actions on the threat of Tehran building nuclear weapons.

Iran has repeatedly claimed that its nuclear programme is peaceful.

At the same time, according to the IAEA, Iran had more than 400 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60%, which is close to the level sufficient to create several nuclear warheads in a short time.
