The world of diplomacy and international relations is rarely calm. This time, attention is focused on relations between the US and Poland. US President Donald Trump has made a statement that could mark a new phase in the strengthening of the US-Polish alliance. He announced that Washington and Warsaw are close to making ‘significant progress’ towards establishing a permanent US military base on Polish territory. Should this happen, the American military presence on NATO’s eastern flank would be substantially strengthened.
Trump expressed his confidence in the success of this project, highlighting the role of Polish President Karol Nawrocki, whom he described as his friend and a resolute leader. According to him, the location of the base will be announced shortly, which will underline the historic significance of this step for both countries.
Karol Nawrocki, for his part, noted the Polish government’s readiness to facilitate the implementation of this initiative. He assured the public that Poland would do everything possible to provide the best possible location for the new military base.
Interestingly, talk of a permanent US military presence in Poland is nothing new. Poland’s Deputy Minister of Defence, Paweł Zalevski, confirmed back in August that the initial phase of negotiations with Washington had been completed. A subsequent meeting between representatives of the two countries on 10 September in Warsaw only served to reinforce the parties’ intentions.
At present, US troops are already stationed in Poland, but they operate on a rotational basis. Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Warsaw has been actively seeking to increase the presence of its allies on NATO’s eastern border, and the establishment of a permanent base could be one step in this direction.
However, it is worth noting that discussions about a permanent military base are taking place against the backdrop of a broader review of the US military presence in Europe. This adds an additional element of uncertainty to the future of US-Polish military cooperation.
