Trump commented on Putin’s announced three-day ceasefire

US President Donald Trump has once again voiced his opinion that Russia wants a resolution to the war against Ukraine and commented on the three-day ceasefire announced by Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

“I think we have come a long way. And maybe something will happen. I hope it will happen. As you know, President Putin announced a three-day ceasefire, which doesn’t sound like much, but it is a lot if you know where we started we had a president who hadn’t spoken to Putin in three years. None of this should have happened. This war should never have happened. You’re going to be very disappointed when you find out the actual number of people killed. Far more than the numbers you are quoting. It’s a very deadly, terrible war,” Trump said while speaking to reporters at the White House, 5 May.

In recent months, Washington has stepped up efforts to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. US President Donald Trump on 25 April called on Ukraine and Russia to meet for high-level talks to reach an agreement to end the war between them after White House envoy Steve Witkoff met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on 27 April that a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine should be concluded soon, and Washington is trying to determine whether to continue to play the role of mediator. He did not say how long the Trump administration was prepared to wait for a breakthrough.

The Kremlin said on 28 April that Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a ceasefire on the “days of the 80th anniversary of the Victory Day” – 8, 9 and 10 May.
