US President Donald Trump has said that Iran is incapable of reaching an agreement to abandon its nuclear programme.
In an April 29 post on Truth Social, Trump said, “Iran can’t get their act together. They don’t know how to sign an agreement to give up nuclear weapons. They better come to their senses soon!”
He did not specify exactly what such a “deal” would involve.
His message also included an image of Trump created by an artificial intelligence: he is wearing aviator goggles holding a machine gun while fire rages behind him.
This new statement by the US president comes amidst the backdrop that talks between Iran and the United States remain at an impasse after another round of talks in Islamabad failed to yield any positive results amid the ongoing ceasefire.
Earlier this week, it was reported that Iran had put forward an offer to open the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the lifting of the naval blockade by the US military, but US government officials reportedly did not accept the offer.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio explicitly called the offer unacceptable.
In Iran, officials are often silent on the matter, but recent media discussions have raised the issue that lifting the naval blockade should be a precondition for negotiating any agreement with the United States, while the Iranian government’s resistance to dismantling Tehran’s nuclear programme has been cited as one of the main obstacles that led to the failure of Iran-US talks.
