Trump extends US state of emergency over ‘harmful Russian foreign policy actions’

US President Donald Trump has extended for another year the state of emergency regime in the country, which was introduced by his predecessor Joe Biden because of “harmful foreign policy actions of Russia”, according to the official website of the US Federal Register.

The agency recalled that the state of emergency regime was introduced by decree of former US President Biden in April 2021. The list of actions that Russia is committing includes:

  • Attempts to undermine free and fair democratic elections in the US and other countries;
  • engaging in malicious cyber activities against the United States and its allies and partners;
  • promoting and using transnational corruption to influence foreign governments;
  • engaging in extraterritorial activities targeting dissidents or journalists;
  • undermining security in countries and regions important to U.S. national security;
  • violating universally recognised principles of international law, including respect for the territorial integrity of states. This continues to pose an “unusual and extreme threat to national security,” U.S. foreign policy, and the economy.

“For this reason, the national emergency … should remain in effect beyond 15 April 2025,” the document concluded.

Earlier, on 2 April, the US imposed sanctions on three more Russian citizens, three Russian entities and one dry cargo ship, the United States Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said.

As follows from the published data, the sanctions were imposed on Russian citizens Yuri Belyakov, Vyacheslav Vidanov, Russian citizen and Afghan citizen Sohrab Gairat, as well as Afghan Ushang Gairat, who has registration in Russia.

In addition, the sanctions lists include Russian companies Edison LLC, Kolibri Group LLC and Sky Frame LLC, as well as the dry cargo ship AM Theseus. According to Reuters, the sanctions were imposed because of ties with the Yemeni Houthi group, which the United States considers a terrorist group.
