US President Donald Trump has announced a 50% tariff on copper imports from 1 August this year.
“After receiving a credible national security assessment, I am announcing a 50% tariff on copper to take effect on 1 August 2025,” Trump wrote on The Truth Social.
He blamed past administrations for the decline of the US copper industry, saying copper was needed to make semiconductors, aircraft, batteries for electric cars and military equipment.
“America will build a dominant copper industry again,” Trump added.
